I was supposed to be up at 4:30am, but didn’t actually wake up till 5am. A very familiar weekday routine for me, except today was Sunday. So, why was I up so early on a Sunday? I was volunteering for the Sleepy Hollow Sprint Triathlon, and they needed the volunteers there before 6am. I have done this race in the past two years, but this year, I made the decision to skip participating and to volunteer instead. After 6 years on the triathlon circuit, it was time I started giving back. After a few hours of ordering people to remove their shirts and drop their pants (so I can write their race numbers and ages on their arms and legs!), and then directing these athletes through a section of the bike course, I was famished! I needed to fuel up for my own bike ride on the Bronx River Parkway later that day for Bicycle Sunday.
Today was a good day for a treat. So, I headed over to the Bagel Emporium in the Stop and Shop shopping center in Tarrytown to pick up some bagels for me and my parents. Sunday morning bagels was always a treat at my family’s household. The Bagel Emporium is located next to the Stop and Shop, and a large space for a bagel shop. There are a few tables and chairs for those who decide to eat in. It was about 10:30am by the time I arrived, and already there was a line and a flurry of activity. After about 5 minutes on line, I was able to shout out my order over the commotion. “6 bagels, 2 cinnamon raisin, 4 everything!”. Six bagels came out to $6, and off I went to my parents’ house to share my bounty. In the car, all I could smell was the aroma of the everything bagels. I was getting even more hungry!
At the house, the bagels were taken out. My mom had just bought a new container of Philadelphia cream cheese (the full fat, regular version. All or nothing!), so I excitedly grabbed my favorite bagel, the cinnamon raisin bagel. The bagel was huge, and so fresh and soft. My usual favorite is a toasted cinnamon raisin with a little cream cheese. This bagel was fresh enough that toasting was not necessary. I sliced it up, and slathered on the cream cheese. It was delicious. The bagel was soft and each bite tore away easily with just the right amount of resistance from the outer surface. The raisins were sweet and plentiful, and since I was able to cream cheese it myself, the amount was just perfect. After I finished, I wanted more. I did have one more, but the bike ride I was about to embark on was not going to burn enough calories to cover my first bagel, let alone a second one! At the insistence of my mother, I packed up the other cinnamon raisin bagel. It will be my breakfast tomorrow, with a little peanut butter, or just plain (depending on if I run in the morning).
The czar says: For a good bagel in the Tarrytown area, this place hasn’t let me down yet. Service is quick, and it is a cash only establishment. I’ve also been here on Fridays for a post-run egg on a plain bagel, and it always hit the spot good (or I was just really hungry).
