Ron Blacks is one of the numerous restaurant/bars that have popped up on Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains over the past few years.  We were hungry, Ron Blacks was the first place we reached from the car, they serve brunch, done.

The brunch isn’t anything spectacular.  Each item comes with a complimentary bloody mary, mimosa, or champagne.  I wasn’t feeling too awesome, so I opted instead for some tea.  Lipton tea for those who were wondering.

They had a breakfast sandwich on the menu that caught my eye:  Scrambled Eggs, American Cheese, and Bacon on a croissant.  I haven’t had one of those in ages, and something like that would really hit the spot.

After a bit, the meals all came.  The croissant was large and hardy enough to support the eggs, cheese, and two strips of bacon, but tender and flaky enough to still be a pretty decent croissant.  The bacon pretty much disappeared in the sandwich, but everything else was pretty good.  It apparently came with potatoes, a sad scoop of potatoes, that wasn’t really necessary to make the meal filling.

The czar says:  Ron Blacks is not disappointing.  Pretty solid brunch, nothing too out of the ordinary when it comes to brunching at a bar (essentially).

What started off as a trip to have a Parisian breakfast wound up as an early St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Well, sort of.

After being turned away from Rue de Crepes in Harrison due to a lack of a reservation, we circled back to White Plains and settled on Ron Blacks, one of the many (and some would argue interchangeable) pub-type establishments lining Mamaroneck Avenue.

I couldn’t quite decide between savory or sweet…so I got both. Ok, so the sweet, in the form of the waffles, were shared with the group. The cheddar and sausage fritatta was all mine.

The fritatta wasn’t really what you’d call a fritatta. I typically think of that meal as delicate, a light kind of breakfast. This, however, was what you’d expect from a pub: heavy, kind of greasy. It all had the taste of a mashup of breakfast food from a Burger King or the like. But I was so hungry by that point that I would eat anything. It was good, not particularly healthy, but it got the job done. And there was complimentary champagne. With a cherry.

Is Ron Blacks worth it for brunch? No, not really. There are more intriguing options (including Rue de Crepes…we’ll get there someday, with a reservation.) But for hungry pub-crawlers in White Plains, it delivers filling food at a reasonable price (about $9 for my meal).

Daylight savings time screwed me this morning. I was supposed to meet the WBC at 11am and instead met them at 12pm. As luck would have it, the place they originally tried to go to was too good for them, so they circled around and met me in White Plains where we randomly entered any place that had “Brunch” in the window. And today it was Ron Blacks, which is just another typical Irish pub in White Plains.  Despite being so typical, they had two great things going for them for brunch: decent breakfast items and a good price. A fritatta, which was basically a 1-skillet omelette, came out pretty good, no burned or uncooked eggs, the sausage was tasty, and so were the potatoes. Even the toast was decent. It was a filling breakfast that also came with champagne, all for just 9 dollars. You could get a similar meal that is just as good minus the champagne for two-thirds of the price at a diner or breakfast counter, but you’ll miss out on the many sports playing on the various TVs, a comfortable atmosphere to complain about things, alcohol, Swedish foot massages. OK, so 3 out of 4 of those things I just said.

I was actually quite surprised that the breakfast here was decent. I’d return to Ron Blacks to hang out with old friends, or at least 4 out of 5 my of fellow WBC members. (Editor’s Note: We’re all pretty certain that all of Andrew’s “old friends” are the same as the WBC members.)
