Our opening quote comes courtesy of the metal band Punishment, via Fire Island co-host Tomas. Let me take a moment to give a shout-out to the site that Tomas runs, The Musician’s Lab. Like music? Like podcasts? Then you should like The Musician’s Lab. Come on, do it. Like them.
Anyway, while the rest of the WBC was holding down the metaphorical breakfast fort in Westchester, I was doing a different thing, taking a much needed vacation on Fire Island. From the moment I stepped onto the ferry at Bay Shore, LI, I was instantly in vacation mode, and when I stepped off the ferry at the dock in Ocean Beach 20 minutes later, I was transported to a world of R&R. Now, maybe I’m a cynical New Yorker type of person, but the thing that struck me about Ocean Beach was how darn friendly everyone was. Locals offered help, they smiled and said hello. There are no cars on the island, which just makes everything blissfully quiet and easygoing. People ride bikes (with bells and baskets!) and pull little red wagons behind them. It was beautiful.
I could go on about my vacation, detailing how my sunscreen didn’t blend well and made me look like a goth kid, explaining in amazement how I didn’t crash my rented bike despite not having ridden a bike in upwards of 15 years (I guess you really don’t forget!), and how with my flashlight I accidentally became the nighttime sex on the beach patrol. But I know what you’re all here for, you want to hear about the breakfasts. Ok, I’ll get on with it.
I had breakfast at two establishments in Ocean Beach: Rachel’s Restaurant and The Landing. Read on for my reviews, as well as reviews from some very special guests!

Disappointment is an inevitable part of life. We are disappointed by lovers, disappointed by friends, or disappointed by our district’s representatives.
And sometimes we are disappointed by breakfast.
Which of these things disappointed the WBC this week? The reader who guesses correctly wins an awesome prize.*
*Note: There is no prize. Just the satisfaction of knowing you correctly guessed the answer to this beyond painfully obvious question.

May 21 was, according to some, Rapture Day, the start of 5 months of judgment days, the start of end times, all culminating with the end of the world in October.
The WBC decided to kick all this off with breakfast at the Star Diner in White Plains. It’s not every restaurant that has to go up against the question “Was this a place worthy of Rapture Day breakfast?”
We posed this question to ourselves at the end of our meal. (Well, not all of us. Patrick was absent from breakfast, leading the remaining WBC members to assume he had flown over to Hong Kong in order to be raptured at their 6:00 local time.)
So, was our breakfast rapture-worthy? Had Patrick, in fact, been raptured? Read on to find out.

One rainy Sunday 50% of the WBC learned that Pumpernickel isn’t just a bread, it’s also a restaurant in Ardsley. This outing also saw the establishment of a new WBC rule. Want to know the rule? Read on hungry masses, read on.

We ate a special breakfast at Sylvia’s new place. However, only one review was produced. So here it is.
Jeffrey
In an almost snap decision, we decide to have breakfast at Sylvia’s new place. Exciting, I know! So, I just need to swing by White Plains to pick Andrew up from the train station and then Trader Joe’s for some supplies, and then we’re off! Wait! We need to stop off in Tarrytown for a box of coffee from Coffee Labs. Totally worth it!
So, I guess I’m supposed to review this as I do any other place…
We arrive in the parking lot and we call Sylvia to let us in. Pat comes to the rescue and opens the front door. (Editor’s Note: It was actually Shelley who ran down the three flights of stairs to the rescue to let Jeffrey and Andrew into the building. The Editor is a bit offended that Jeffrey doesn’t seem to be able to draw a distinction between Shelley and Pat.) As I enter the establishment, I was greeted with the lovely music from Shelley’s iPod and her specially made brunch play list. The play list was strong with good hits from the early 00’s to now, and slight dips into the late 90’s. There were some questionable choices, for example, I noticed that there was a point when I thought I was standing in an elevator (Editor’s Note: It was Spanish guitar music, not elevator music), but then Shelley, with her trusty remote, fast-forwarded to the next song, which sounded like it came from the Gray’s Anatomy soundtrack (Editor’s Note: It wasn’t from the Gray’s Anatomy soundtrack). The remote came in handy later when we needed to pause the music. Patrick was showing off the Stephen Colbert version of Rebecca Black’s Friday. Much better than the original, in my opinion.
Now, we review the food. There was a lot of it. The day before, Sylvia and I picked up some Cinnamon Swirl Bread with Raisins from The Kneaded Bread. Made into French Toast, it was amazing! I don’t even know how to explain it. It’s just good. Other than that, there were some scrambled eggs, hash browns, and Sylvia made some potato hash the night before. I was happy. I love potatoes. Also, Andrew picked up some apple-smoked bacon at Trader Joe’s. It too was delicious. The meal was incredibly filling.
All in all, Chez Sylvia’s is a good place to go for brunch. Price wise, I suppose it’s good. I did shell out a good amount of money for supplies and then another good amount for the coffee. But I suppose in the long run it’s worth it, as long as it buys me a place to sleep every once in a while.
