The WBC trip to Auray Gourmet in Larchmont was so civilized, so peaceful, so sophisticated. Why, you ask? Because it was just the gals of the WBC. Read on to find out how the meal was for these ladies who breakfast.

Small Bites Partnership

10 May

The WBC is so excited about our partnership with Small Bites. A summary of our meals will appear on Small Bites the first Friday of each month. Check out our introductory post!

And to kick things off, read our list of the Top 5 places to take mom for Mother’s Day, which appeared in the May 9 issue of The Journal News.

We’re so excited, someone just had to punch Jeffrey in the face:

Thanks as always to all our readers. It’s the positive feedback we get that keeps us motivated to keep breakfasting our way through Westchester.

Happy Breakfasting, everyone!!

Emma’s Ale House

Emma’s Ale House in White Plains has been on our brunch list for a long time, probably since the WBC started. So, this was a visit two years in the making. Fun fact: According to its website, Emma’s is apparently the only restaurant in White Plains to have been Green Restaurant Association for its environmental efforts. Pair that with the charming dog-theme to the decor, and Emma’s seems like a wonderful place to dine. Were we satisfied?

It’s not every day that a member of the WBC hits a milestone age. This time it was Sylvia’s turn (but to be polite, we won’t say which milestone–let’s just say it’s over 10 but under 90). So, the WBC had to celebrate in grand style, lest we feel the wrath of our breakfast czar. What would we do? Well, nothing says celebration like a birthday brunch in Manhattan, and Sylvia selected Freemans, a rustic-style hipster haven tucked down an alley in the Lower East Side. Freemans offers a full menu of hearty brunch items ranging from standard fare like eggs, pancakes, and mac and cheese to more creative dishes like Devils on Horseback and smoked trout, both of which were enjoyed by members of the WBC. And if you just need a little absinthe to go with your bacon (like Reid), Freemans offers a range of cocktails to wash down your meal. So, what did we think? Did the Devils on Horseback gallop away? And how old is Sylvia? (We’ll never tell…and no, that’s not an intentional reference to Gossip Girl.) Read on to find out.

Pancake Breakfast at Muscoot Farm

The WBC found itself shortstaffed this week. Reid was off in Vietnam spending Dong like there was no tomorrow; Andrew was off running some race; and Pat, well, he’s still in exile in Minnesota. So, to fill the void we invited some very fun friends to join us at a family-friendly/kid-friendly/Jeff-friendly pancake breakfast up at Muscoot Farm in Katonah. We ate pancakes, and then saw some piggies and horsies and chickens. And Shelley accidentally taught a 2-year-old to say “Jeffrey scary.” Which may be true, but probably not a great thing to teach a kid to say. But how were the pancakes, you ask? Well, you know the drill…

Popover Café

18 Feb

Regular readers of this blog will have noticed that the WBC has several traditions, one of our favorites being breakfast at the new home of one of our members. This week our lucky host was Reid, proud new owner of a lovely apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, which he shares with the delightful moose cookie jar you see above.* (Mr. Moose may just have to become the WBC’s first official mascot.) Fortunately for the WBC, Reid and his moose live within walking distance of scores of delicious dining establishments, including the Popover Café. We’ve had Popover on our list of places to try for quite some time, so it was a done deal. NYC, here comes the WBC.
*The photo of Mr. Moose is absolutely, definitely, certainly not just a placefiller because no one got a photo of the exterior of Popover Café. No, not at all.

Wobble Cafe (again)

With our wallets still feeling the pinch from our visit to Mint, the WBC decided to once again visit an old favorite: Wobble Cafe. Since we’ve been here numerous times before, we decided to include reviews only of the meals we hadn’t yet tried before: S’mores Pancakes (enjoyed by Reid) and the Vermonster panini (gobbled down by Shelley).

Mint

Don’t be fooled by the name or the red and white striped awning; Mint Premium Foods in Tarrytown is not a candy shop. Instead, it’s a gourmet food shop / restaurant. Since relocating to a larger space on Main Street, its offerings have been expanded. A big chalkboard outside that says “Now serving breakfast and dinner” was all the WBC needed to see to convince us to give Mint’s breakfast a try.

Dong Yi Feng / Good Kitchen

Dong Yi Feng / Good Kitchen

135-29 37th Ave Flushing, NY 11354

Happy year of the dragon, readers. Since half the WBC is of Chinese descent, it’s only appropriate that we have adopted an annual tradition of a dim sum breakfast to mark the Chinese New Year. Apparently, we’ve already sampled the two worthwhile dim sum establishments in Westchester (see Central Seafood from 2010 and Aberdeen from 2011), so this year we headed to Queens. Yes, Queens. Was the dim sum more authentic? Did we see any dragons? And what made Reid so angry? Read on.
